Overview
Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center is an 881-bed quaternary care academic medical center that is a joint venture between Baylor College of Medicine and CHI St. Luke’s Health. Located in the Texas Medical Center, the hospital is the home of the Texas Heart® Institute, a cardiovascular research and education institution founded in 1962 by Denton A. Cooley, MD. Baylor St. Luke’s also has three community emergency centers offering adult and pediatric care for the Greater Houston area.
Responsibilities
1. Continuous observation of monitored EKG patterns and pulse oximetry as ordered. Sets up, calibrates and Maintains settings and alarms on telemetry module. Obtains rhythm strip at beginning of shift, on admission and whenever changes occur. Labels strip with patient identification, time, lead monitored, PR interval, ST interval, QRS interval
2. Trouble shoots telemetry equipment, Ensures monitors are functioning properly, ensure telemetry supplies are readily available. Accounts for all telemetry transmitters, Verifies daily telemetry charges
3. Identifies changes in rate, rhythm, or pattern, notifying RN of these changes. Responds appropriately to emergency situations, runs a continuous EKG strip and notifies appropriate staff
4. Assists in answering telephone, Ensures pull down desks are in upright position after posting EKG strips on patient chart, keeps work area neat and clean, no food or drink in work station, Ensures transmitters are properly cleaned between patients, electrical cords off floor
5. Demonstrates a commitment to personal growth and development by completing annual mandatory in-services and Code Validation within given time frame, attends unit-based in-services, attends monthly departmental meetings. Demonstrates flexibility in responding to unit/service needs, i.e., floating to other areas.
Qualifications
Required:
High school Diploma/GED; One year of experience as a monitor tech or other patient care experience; All to verify with leadership.
Minimum Experience:
One (1) year of experience as a monitor tech, EMT or Paramedic
Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: *Demonstrate knowledge in the area of EKG interpretation through the following: a) Pass the Basic Dysrhythmia Rhythm Interpretation Exam b) Successfully complete the Basic Dysrhythmia Interpretation Course (if applicable)
