Job/Position DescriptionPublic Health Nurse IIUnder the supervision of the Tuberculosis (TB) Program Supervisor, performs complex public health nursing work. Works under general supervision with moderate degree of latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgement. Works as part of the Communicalbe Disease Program team. This position implements perinatal hepatitis B prevention services throughout Public Health Regions (PHR) 9/10 and 1. Assures or conducts perinatal hepatitis B prevention and case management services for HBsAg+ pregnant women living in communities outside the jurisdiction of a local health department. Serves as a liaison between regional, local and central office Immunization Unit staff on all matters related to perinatal hepatitis B prevention. Conducts site visits to local health departments to assess perinatal hepatitis B prevention activities and to birthing hospitals and centers to assess compliance with state laws and reporting requirements. Makes recommendations to improve perinatal hepatitis B prevention activities. Trains staff at birthing hospitals/centers and other health care providers on procedures and practices to prevent the perinatal transmission of the hepatitis B virus. Essential Job Functions (45%) Prevention Activities - Develops, implements and conducts perinatal hepatitis B prevention activities and services throughout PHR 9/10 and 1. Activites include: and#149;Identifying HBsAG+ pregnant women by reviewing laboratory and other medical records;and#149;Making home visits/phone calls to interview HBsAG+ pregnant women and identify household contacts under age two (2);and#149;Providing accurate and complete information and education on hepatitis B to HBsAg+ women;and#149;Assuring administration of hepatitis B immune globulin to a HBsAg+ womanand#146;s child at birth and completion of the infantand#146;s hepatitis B vaccine series;and#149;Ensuring post-serological testing of a child is conducted after the completion of the hepatitis B vaccine series;and#149;Documenting clinical findings accurately and completing mother, infant and contact summary reports;and#149;Entering mother and infant contact data into Access databases; generates reports; and provides data to Immunization Unit in Austin according to established schedules and deadlines.(30%) Compliance Activities - Conducts site visits to local health departments to assess perinatal hepatitis B prevention activities and to birthing centers and hospitals to assess compliance with state laws and reporting requirements. Activities include: and#149;Reviewing medical records and patient assessments to determine compliance with perinatal hepatitis B prevention policies;and#149;Evaluating perinatal hepatitis B prevention services;and#149;Providing clinical on-site technical assistance as appropriate;and#149;Preparing statistical and other summary reports of perinatal hepatitis B prevention activities;and#149;Making recommendations for improvements;and#149;Communicating findings to Immunization Unit staff in Austin;(20%) Education Activities - Plans and conducts education on the importance of hepatitis B prevention. Activites include: and#149;Planning / developing / providing education to staff of local health departments, birthing hospitals and centers, physicians who provide prenatal services, midwives, pediatricians and family practice physicians.and#149;Participating in health fairs and conferences as appropriate.
