Scientific Writer - IBM Research - IBM (Texas)

Introduction

We are seeking an experienced scientific writer to join our team of researchers, designers, and writers crafting an end-to-end experience for IBM Research.

The Scientific Writer bridges the gap between science and story. The narratives you create will span every facet of the Research footprint, including web content, video, social media materials, print, and presentations. You will work closely with internal and external partners to communicate the amazing work of our research staff members and leadership.

Everything you create builds upon the core story of IBM Research: Inventing What's Next. You know how to identify impactful research and you can communicate it in a way that drives excitement and engagement on any platform. You are a storyteller.

This role is based in the New York City area or Cambridge, MA with opportunities for remote work.

This role may involve occasional travel to IBM Research sites.

Your Role and Responsibilities

The IBM Research Brand Experience Design organization creates a quality, differentiated, end-to-end experience for IBM Research. The team crafts every experience and encounter, internally and externally, and our work crosses nearly every category of output: research and strategy, communications, content development, symbology and systems, web and digital experiences, tools and training, and physical spaces.

Many of these experiences are centered around written content. This is your domain. Your work will include translating research publications into engaging narratives for a variety of audiences. You will develop scripts for video content and you will write copy for the IBM Research website.

In a Scientific Writer, we're seeking a creator. You must have a passion and demonstrated experience delivering projects with real impact. You possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills and an open ear. You will develop a keen understanding of the work happening both inside of IBM Research and across the competitive landscapes of hybrid cloud, AI, quantum, and science. You must be able to speak to audiences from all knowledge levels, from the general public to subject matter experts.

You work well with a wide range of scientific, technical, business development, marketing and communications professionals, ensuring published materials are consistent with the rigorous quality standards of IBM Research.

You will also drive the organization’s tone and style, developing a distinct voice that informs all content we create.

We expect the Scientific Writer to:

+ Push the envelope. We're always learning how to do our jobs better. Apply your unique experience and perspective to develop new and novel ways to tell stories and articulate our research accomplishments

+ Serve as copy chief for the IBM Research website and research experiences, including writing, editing, and editorial oversight

+ Develop and maintain a strategic awareness of the competitive landscape and conversations in our research focus areas: hybrid cloud, AI, quantum,and science

+ Ensure our content is modular and flexible for use across multiple formats to deliver consistent messaging at scale

+ Recruit, manage, and lead specialist freelance writers to maximize productivity and impact

+ Provide guidance and support to marketing, communications, business development, and researchers

+ Collaborate with stakeholders to ensure the information we develop is consistent, accurate, high-quality, and engaging

+ Ensure all content conveys IBM Research's key messages to target audiences in a consistent and compelling manner

+ Partner with the digital strategy team to track engagement and the impact of our content

Required Technical and Professional Expertise

+ Significant science communication experience for a research institute, technology company, scientific publisher, the scientific reporting division of a major news outlet, or the equivalent

+ A portfolio of written material and other digital and/or multimedia content, including materials created for external publication or release

+ Three+ years in a writing or editorial role or equivalent in freelance experience

+ Ability to work with highly technical information and deliver with a high level of accuracy and attention to detail

+ Demonstrable expertise building and maintaining relationships, including relationships with individuals from other disciplines, business units, and senior leadership

+ Experience working with third-party contractors and freelance writers

+ Experience with design and layout of web-based written communications, including the use of content management systems

+ Strong project management skills with a commitment to be highly organized and determination to meet deadlines

Preferred Technical and Professional Expertise

+ A master’s or higher degree in a relevant scientific or communications discipline

+ Experience with staff management and financial management

+ Experience of managing third-party contractors
