| Job Summary (Summary of the basic functions of the position) Supports the diagnostic evaluation of tissue by histological procedures. Performs histological duties within the guidelines established by histology and Mohs laboratory (clinic or stand-alone laboratory). SECTION 2: Duties and Responsibilities (Responsibilities necessary to accomplish job functions)
Performs a variety of specialized, difficult, delicate and complex chemical, histopathological or immunologic procedures in identifying specific components.
Receives tissue in fresh unfixed state or in fixation solution and dehydrates, clears and infiltrate specimens with paraffin using automatic processor.
Performs special processing procedures such as nails, bone decalcification, mapping specimens for Mohs and properly embedding for frozen sectioning and prepares fresh tissue for immunofluorescence. Most specimens are skin either small biopsy or large excision and maybe of extremely small size.
Identifies anatomical structures and abnormalities in tissue samples and embeds tissue in paraffin blocks, exercising necessary care so that the tissue will be properly oriented and diagnostically significant once sectioned.
Cuts tissue sections using microtome and cryostat. Prepares frozen section and mounts sections on glass slides, and prepares slides for staining.
Prepares all the reagents for stains. Stain slides using variety of stains requiring many complex and delicate procedures and careful control of the staining reaction to achieve precise staining result.
Select the proper control to assure correct results of the stain or reaction, reviews staining quality for acceptability, and forward completed slide(s) to the dermatopathologist.
Maintains and adjust, and programs electronic equipment used (e.g. tissue processor, automatic stainer, embedding center, automatic coverslipper, etc.)
Performs non-routine and highly sensitive immunoperoxidase or similar antigen-antibody tests requiring a number of delicate and precise processes. Titrates a serum to obtain appropriate dilution factor and proper use of enzyme digestion.
Assists in the evaluation of new procedures and equipment for possible adoption by the laboratory environment.
Conducts quality control procedures on equipment, reagent, and products and maintains proper records for quality control reports.
Prepares slides with permanent labels and files appropriately.
Maintains Mohs/Excision logbooks.
Assist with cleaning and sterilization of surgical instruments as needed.
Adheres to all safety policies and procedures in performing job duties and responsibilities while supporting a culture of high quality and great customer service.
Performs other duties that may be necessary or in the best interest of the organization.

Vocational/Technical Degree or Certification
Associates Degree (A.A) or equivalent from a two year college
Registered Histological Technician or eligible for registration within one year
BLS/CPR certification
